Wood panel, Japanese paper Oguni washi, pigment, sumi, nikawa glue
30 × 30 cm

Influenced by her life between Tokyo and Barcelona, Mari Ito’s work emerges through moments of reflection and imagination. Through blooming pods, biomorphic forms, and vivid landscapes, Ito explores desire as an invisible force that shapes human behaviour, emotion, and society.

Trained in Nihonga, a traditional Japanese style of painting that emphasizes natural pigments, layering, and meticulous craftsmanship—Ito works with mineral pigments, sumi ink, handmade Japanese washi paper and nikawa glue. These materials lend her work a distinct luminosity and texture, allowing colour and surface to shift delicately with light and depth.
